The Best Penticton Bakeries: Croissants, Bread, Cakes and More

Craving a freshly baked sweet treat or need to source some sourdough for homemade brunch? No problem! From artisan bakeries turning out crusty loaves and the flakiest pastries to neighbourhood favourites known for decadent desserts and top tier coffee, this guide highlights the best bakeries in and around Penticton.

The Peach City is better known for wineries, beaches, and breweries than bakeries, but there are a few excellent local bakeries worth adding to your itinerary. Several of these bakeries are relatively new additions to Penticton, having opened their doors within the last few years (one of them just a couple of months ago!)

JR and I are local to Penticton, having lived here since 2015. JR usually bakes sourdough bread twice a week while I often bake birthday cakes and cookies. Needless to say, we’re a little picky when it comes to choosing where to buy baked goods! The following bakeries are our go-to spots for fresh bread, pastries and tasty treats.

The Best Bakeries in Penticton

We’ve rounded up the bakeries worth seeking out for your next sweet treat or loaf of sourdough. Let’s get started.

Petrasek Artisan Bakery

Petrasek should be at the very top of your bakery list. Everything at this downtown bakery is made from scratch, with traditional European techniques and flair. The husband and wife team originally moved to Canada in the early 2000’s from Slovakia, after years of experience working in European bakeries.

Flaky, buttery croissants are the star of the show at Petrasek, with six different varieties typically available. My favourite are the almond crossiants with marzipan. The ‘Everything’ croissant is fantastic too. Beyond the pastries, expect to see various breads (including sourdough and multigrain), cookies, cinnamon buns and more.

Petrasek’s cafe is cosy and whimsical, decorated with faux brick, many clocks and black and white photos. If you haven’t been to Penticton in a few years, you may remember Petrasek from its former location in the Nanaimo Square building. While the ‘new’ spot is located a bit further along Main Street, it offers a more spacious setting. There’s a great patio too!

Sunflower Ukrainian Cafe

One of downtown Penticton’s newest spots, The Sunflower Ukrainian Cafe brings something fresh and unique to the local dining scene. This is the second location for the husband and wife team, after opening their first cafe in Summerland in 2023.

Everything at the Sunflower Cafe is homemade, made from traditional recipes passed down for generations by the owners’ families. They specialise in indulgent Ukrainian cakes and pastries as well as savoury dishes such as borscht and varenyky (dumplings similar to pierogi). The medivnyk (honey cake) is a highlight, as is the coffee.

Inside, the cafe has a bright, modern feel, though the patio is sure to become a favourite spot for enjoying a meal outdoors. Located in the 200 block of Main Street, it’s the ideal destination for a coffee and treat during the Saturday markets.
